The Young's Landscape in Progress
This is the Young's beautiful home in Mechanic Falls, Maine. The home once belongd to a gentleman farmer and boasted an authentic spring-house, cattle on the property and beautiful swimming pool. It still has its original stone foundation well-house and a truly romantic carriage house. The grand stone porch invites one to a restful afternoon of quiet contemplation, or a breakfast cup of coffee. The Youngs wanted a water feature on the property, and they also wanted to draw the eye more to the front of the home. By removing the lattice work that marred the first archway of the porch, we opened up the face of the home and accentuated the beautiful theme of the arches. The reflecting pool was the perfect scale to compliment the architecture, and it's more formal round design fit the geometry of the arches.
Seen from above, note the flagstone edging around the pool and the lovely path. Mr. Young has been able to put the bones of the landscape in place this year - preparing this part of the property for the final touches: the shrubs and perennials that will grace the walks and soften the edges of the reflecting pool. This view from the steps shows an area that will one day be a flag-stone patio leading out to the pool, and extending the outdoor living area in the front of the home. As the weeping cherry tree (to the left) matures, it will provide some privacy to one side of the pool, and will help to anchor the water feature with the landscape.
