How to Time my Project
The best time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials in North Carolina is late summer/fall. The hot time of the year is passing by, so watering becomes less crucial. New plants require 1" of water a week (that inch all has to fall at one time, 1/4" one day and 3/4" another day won't cut it!). These watering requirements continue until the ground freezes and deciduous plants lose their leaves. Because of this, it is easiest to keep a new plant alive later in the season, and then allow it to establish itself over the winter and early spring.
For a fall planting, it's best to begin your design process in the late spring or early summer - at the latest! It takes time to plan, and you also want plenty of time to prepare your planting areas and gather your materials.
One may also plant in the early to late spring and on into summer. The hotter it gets, the more vigilant you must be about watering.
If you are hoping for an early to mid-spring planting, contact a designer by January at the latest. Fall is also a great time for planning - allowing you to spend the winter dreaming and planning for your new landscape!

For years we have been talking about updating the area around our home. When we learned Kirsten Reberg-Horton was back in town, we jumped at the opportunity. Kirsten has an artist's eye for color and composition coupled with a horticulturalist's knowledge of the Piedmont plant repertoire. We're thrilled with the visible results of her design and highly recommend her expertise and creativity to all.

Our lakeside property was virtually transformed into a beautiful, environmentally appropriate, and easy to care for garden as a result of Kirsten's efforts. We are delighted with the results and the many compliments which we continue to receive.
It is without reservation that we recommend Kalmia Landscape Design to anyone wishing to beautify and improve their property.

Kirsten provided personalized service, sitting down and talking with us about our lifestyle and desire to have a low-maintenance landscape before developing a plan. She helped lay out an overall look to work toward and provided a number of alternatives to consider. We had plenty of questions and she did a great job answering them, getting back with us quickly when we needed advice. She gladly accompanied us to the nursery and was invaluable in helping us select a variety of shrubs and perennials. Her upbeat enthusiasm for the project proved contagious. Our front yard looks so much better as a result of her ideas and inspiration.

When thinking about your home landscape, consider the following:
- How much maintenance do I like to do? - What kinds of activities do I think will happen in my landscape?
- How much lawn or play space do I need? - Do I want to encourage birds, butterflies or other wildlife to enter my landscape?
- Do I like to entertain outdoors? - How much do I want to/am I able to water my garden? Do I want to include a water catchment system in my design?
- Am I interested in color all season long? - Do I want a place for vegetables or herbs or other multi-use plants?
- What interests me more, flowers or different shades of green - What are some of my favorite plants? What plants do I dislike?
- What types of gardens/landscapes appeal to me? Which of the photos on the style page interest me most? - Do I need places to store trash cans, compost, other materials?

- How long do I plan to stay in this home? How will my use of the landscape change over time?

- What are my cost parameters for the project?
- Am I interested in ecological design? What are my values in relationship to my landscape?
