Pushaw Lake Buffer Project 2004
The Pushaw Lake Buffer Project was designed and planted in the spring and early summer of 2003. Most of the plants survived the harsh winter of 2003-2004, with the loss of only 4 winterberries. The hosta and fern came back beautifully and on the early July day that these photos were taken, the lilies were just beginning to bloom and the dwarf spirea bushes were in their glory.
Before
After: Bill and Mary Phillips have found the divided yard design to work well for their relaxing and entertaining needs. The soft edges of the beds are easy to maintain with a lawn-mower, and the low maintenance plants have matched Bill and Mary's active lifestyle. The blueberry shrubs are fruiting up and it looks like in future years, the grandchildren will have plenty to pick and enjoy.
The center bed of was planted with dwarf spirea, juniper and dwarf arborvitae. The spirea gives summer-color while the evergreens provide lasting color throughout the seasons. The winterberry in this bed did not survive the winter and will be replaced with spirea.
The bed of ferns in front of the bedroom window has come back nicely this year. It would benefit, however, with a few more plants to give it the truly lush feeling that we were trying to achieve. Red adirondack chairs invite you to sit and contemplate the water, while the perched canoe beckons you to a more active lake experience!
Note the lily bed in the upper left corner of this photo. This will be full of blooms in July and August. Once the lily flowers are finished, Mary will be able to cut back the stalks and enjoy the lush waving greenery. The guest cabin is nicely divided with this lovely fence and bed of hydrangea bushes. This planting strip will also catch any water that runs off of the roof of the cabin.
